Councilwoman Janice Hahn and Councilman Tom LaBonge hold the new Sister City Sign with Raffaele Montuori (left) the Administrative Director of the City of Ischia and Carmela Funiciello (middle left) who is President of the Sister City of Ischia Committee in San Pedro. Councilwoman Hahn traveled to Ischia in 2005 to initiate the Sister City relationship. Councilman Tom LaBonge is President of the Sister City of Los Angeles and led a project for a monument pole erected in 2001 on the City Hall corner of First Steet and Main Street where this sign is destined to join the 23 other signs of LA Sister Cities. To complete the signing of the Sister City Agreement with Los Angeles, officials of the City of Ischia, Italy, traveled to LA for a variety of activities, most notably the official signing ceremony in City Council chambers today. Ischia has a population of approx. 50,000 people with an economy that includes fishing, wineries, and tourism. Ischia is closely connected to the traditions and culture of Italian–Americans in Los Angeles, especially in the harbor community of San Pedro. Approximately 30,000 San Pedro residents are of Ischian decent. (Photo by Al Seib/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images)
