Custer Attacks Black Kettle's Camp

Engraving depicts the 7th U.S. Cavalry, under the command of General George Arnstrong Custer, as it attacks a camp of Cheyenne Native Americans under Chief Black Kettle along the Washita River, near what is now Cheyenne, Oklahoma, November 27, 1868. The engraving, signed by J.E. Taylor & J. Karst, is titled 'Gen. Custer's Surprise of an Indian Camp of Over Two Thousand Warriors,' and goes on to say that there were Cheyanne, Arrapahoe, Kiowa, and Comanches present, though it should be noted that this headline implies a simultaneous attack upon all of these camps whereas Custer's forces only attacked the Cheyanne, not realizing at the time that there were other camps nearby.
