Estate Touted As UK Asylum-Seeker Housing Largely Sold To Private Residents
KIGALI, RWANDA - APRIL 05: Housing units as seen at the Bwiza Riverside Estate on April 05, 2024 in Kigali, Rwanda. In March 2023, the British home secretary at the time, Suella Braverman, toured the Bwiza Riverside Estate telling reporters that the units would house asylum seekers deported from the UK, but that now seems unlikely as "the majority" of the units on the estate have been sold to "private people who want to live in them," according to a representative of the estate. While the home secretary had acknowledged that the estate would accommodate both asylum seekers and Rwandans, it's unclear if any are being preserved to house UK deportees. The UK policy of deporting some migrants to Rwanda has been long delayed by legal challenges. (Photo by Luke Dray/Getty Images)
