A frantic appeal, voiced by a woman radio 'ham' operator set in motion drastic action across 8,000 miles and triggered two airlines into flying a desperately needed iron lung to the polio-stricken community of Bariloche, located 900 miles southwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The plea of the woman, Mrs Alicia Parodi, was relayed by a Tarzana 'ham' to Kim Hallamore, Southland iron lung specialist who got busy.
