He was a baptist minister and non-violent activist of the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. Besides, he stood in movements struggling for peace and against poverty. Considered as one of the greatest American orator, his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, given on August 28th, 1963 in front of Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. is one of the most important speeches of the 20th century. In this speech, he invited the audience to put an end to racism, demanding civil rights and economic equality for African-Americans. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis.
