Lucky Luciano
circa 1930: Sicilian-born American gangster Charles 'Lucky' Luciano (1897 - 1962), convicted leader of organized crime in New York, sits at a dining table. His criminal empire included narcotics-peddling, prostitution, extortion, and running vice dens. Even following his imprisonment in 1936 he founded the Crime Syndicate of Mafia families and reorganized crime. Released in 1946 he was deported, turned out of various countries, but eventually buried in the US. (Photo by Keystone/Getty Images)
