(Original Caption) The cloud cover satellite undergoes a "checkout" in the nose cone room of the Vanguard hangar at the Atlantic Missile Test Range, Cape Canaveral, Florida, before being installed in Navy Vanguard (SLV-3), satellite launching vehicle three. Mr. Ed Hicks of the Army Signal Engineering Laboratory is conducting the test. The cloud cover satellite is 20 inches in diameter, weighs 21 1/2 pounds, and is designed to determine the amount of cloud cover over the earth by means of infra-red scanning by two photo electric cells. The experiment is being conducted in connection with the U.S. participation in the international geophysical year cooperative effort being carried out under the sponsorship of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences and the National Science Foundation.
