(Original Caption) This is an artist's conception of the Navy Martin Vanguard three stage rocket vehicle which will place the world's first man-made satellite in its orbit around the Earth. In physical appearance, the satellite launching vehicle well resemble a giant rifle shell complete with bullet. It will be the first liquid fuel rocket designed to be controlled without the use of fins. In the background in the gantry used to place the vehicle on its launching stand, and the concrete blockhouse from which scientists will fire the rocket and record its course. The launching of the satellite is part of the U.S. participation in the International Geophysical Year, 1957-1958.
