(Original Caption) This is the original company in the 1943 production of Oklahoma. From left are Lee Dixon, (Will Parker); Celeste Holm, (Ado Annie); Alfred Drake, (Curly); Joan Roberts, (Laurey); Joseph Buloff, (Ali Hakim); and Betty Garde, (Aunt Eller). The cast member behind Betty Garde is unidentified. Oklahoma is considered the first "concept" musical in the history of American musical theater. In their first major collaboration, Rodgers and Hammerstein agreed to abandon the old methods of writing musicals. Songs and lyrics were to evolve directly from the plot, rather than giving music to the story. In place of formal dance numbers, "American ballets" were added and were in character with the setting.
