George Osborne statement on bank reform report; ENGLAND: London: 11 Downing Street: EXT George Osborne MP (Chancellor of the Exchequer) statement re banking report SOT - I think tomorrow, Britain is going to take big step towards a new banking system - A banking system that lends to families and businesses, that competes around the world, creates jobs / which also doesn't cost the taxpayer and public billions of pounds when it goes wrong / These questions about how to get that banking system should have been asked 10 years ago - they weren't / This new govt is asking these questions, it has asked independent commission to provide the answers / tomorrow we're going to get those answers / From what I've seen it's a very good report - People are going to be impressed with the report from John Vickers and commission / it's an independent report that is asking questions that should have been asked 10 years ago about how we have new banking system that lends fo families, lends to businesses but doesn't cost the tax payer billions of pounds when it goes wrong / should have been asking this 10 years ago, we weren't / this new govt is determined to learn the lessons of what went wrong / that's why we asked this commission to report / think when people see it tomorrow they will be impressed Osborne returns into No.11
