Palestinians construct makeshift shelters from metal sheets amidst devastating Israeli attacks

GAZA, PALESTINE - JANUARY 22: Palestinians, whose homes were destroyed in Israel's bombardments in the northern Gaza Strip, are striving to survive in makeshift shelters constructed from tin metal sheets amidst the wreckage of their demolished houses. Despite the extensive destruction caused by Israeli forces in residential areas, Palestinians in Beit Lahia were captured on camera constructing makeshift shelters in front of their completely demolished homes. The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is reaching catastrophic levels, intensifying each day. UN authorities have described the enclave as “a place of death and despair” in the past three months of the conflict. Over 25,000 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and almost 62,700 injured, according to the Health Ministry in the blockaded enclave. More than 1.9 million have been forced to leave their homes, some multiple times. According to the UN, 85% of the population of Gaza is already internally displaced, amid acute shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure is damaged or destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are in shelters without access to running water, proper food and adequate sanitation. The entire population of Gaza faces crisis levels of food insecurity or worse, according to the World Food Program (WFP), which has warned of an impending famine. More than half a million people in Gaza are starving, with nine out of 10 Palestinians eating less than one meal a day and struggling to find clean, drinkable water. Due to Israel’s genocidal attacks, the infrastructure and basic services have been collapsing daily. As of Dec. 30, approximately 65,000 housing units in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed or made uninhabitable, with an additional 290,000 units suffering damage, as reported by the Government Media Office in Gaza.
