War-torn Ukrainians celebrate centuries-old Malanka carnival at Kyiv train station
KYIV, UKRAINE - JANUARY 13: War-torn Ukrainians gathered at Kyiv train station on Friday (Jan. 13) to celebrate the Malanka carnival amid ongoing Russian attacks in many regions of the country.
Malanka, an ancient Ukrainian folk holiday combining Christian and pagan traditions, marks the beginning of the new year.
Youths clad in traditional Ukrainian clothes put on a traditional show with a 'Koza' and a 'Star', singing shedrivky songs and playing pranks on onlookers.
According to the old tradition, each singing crowd was led by a young man, dressed up as a Malanka girl who, in turn, leads a ‘goat’ heralding a near arrival of spring.(Footage by Oleksii Chumachenko/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
